5 Reasons to Camp in the Autumn

Photo by Andrew Neel on Unsplash

Camping is an all year round activity, providing you have the right equipment! When green turns to oranges and reds, Autumn can be a beautiful time to enjoy the outdoors.

Here are some of our favourite reasons for Autumnal camping;

1.Enjoying warm drinks by the campfire

Campfires may be an all year round camping staple, but there’s something about bundling up, hot chocolate or tea in hand and warming up by the fire in the Autumn. Cosy!

2. Foraging

Foraging is great in the Autumn months- sweet chestnuts line the trails, rosehips can be collected, blackberries are at peak ripeness in September, acorns, mushrooms and more.

3. Quieter

As people tend to camp more in the summer, you can enjoy open spaces virtually empty in the Autumn months. Get some well needed outdoor time in while relishing the quiet.

4. Brisk Air

Wrapping up warm, layering and feeling the fresh crisp air on your face is one of life’s simple pleasures. Warming up by the campfire after a long day of hiking in  the fresh air is an extra bonus.

5. Foliage

Would it be an Autumn camping list if it we didn’t mention the gorgeous foliage? The leaves changing signalling Autumn is spectacular. Hues or orange, red and yellow across the country. Don’t forget to look up at the beautiful trees while hiking.

Why Choose Freeze Dried Meals

Opposed to frozen or dehydrated food, freeze dried food only removes the water content, leaving you with tasty food once you’ve added water back to it. Unlike other methods, freeze dried food retains it’s shape and tastes just as fresh when rehydrated. The freeze drying process removes around 98% of the water from the food, but not the great fresh taste or vitamins and nutrients.

The benefits of choosing these types of foods are

  1. They are much lighter to pack when you are traveling. Since they are such low weight and a smaller size, they are easy to toss into packs for hiking, camping etc.
  2. They have a long shelf life because the water content has been removed and the food then stored in airtight and moisture-proof packaging, they can be stored for months, and sometimes even years without spoiling.
  3. They can be stored virtually anywhere. As freeze dried meal packs only need to be stored at room temperature, you can store them virtually anywhere for a ready meal when you need it.
  4. They don’t just stop at main meals! At BeWell we offer a range of meaty and vegetarian main meals, along with breakfast options and even dessert. So you can have a three course meal throw in your pack or waiting for you at your cabin in the woods.

Enjoying Camping with Your Family

With Covid-19 and travel restrictions, everyone has had to get a little more creative with their holiday plans. Camping is a great family activity. Family holidays can be some of the strongest memories we have from our youth, so make your next camping trip go smoothly with these tips and ideas.

Car activities
Kids can easily become bored on a long journey to a campsite. Older children could enjoy an audio book or playing some car games together such as eye spy to help keep them entertained. A new toy can hold a little one’s attention if they have to be in the car for a while. Breaking up the journey with rest stops to stretch their legs can break up the monotony and help keep everyone happy.

Rainy day options
If you’re camping you probably have lots of plans to be outdoors, but if the weather does turn bad, it’s useful to have a backup plan. You could check out indoor things to do locally, and bring a few colouring books and games they can play with in the tent. It’s also an idea to look for woodland walk that have lots of tree cover.

Enjoying nature
Take advantage of your surroundings to enjoy the great outdoors. Nature walks can be exciting for kids, especially if you live in a city. To help keep their interest why not try a scavenger hunt, or a nature bingo card. You could even bring cheap or disposable cameras and see who can snap the best picture. Get a family shot and you’ll have a lovely souvenir of your trip.

Try something new
There are some activities that you might have done as a child but would be a first for your children. Try singing campfire songs and toasting marshmallows together. Have you thought about trying one of our self-heating meals? Kids will enjoy the novelty of a meal which gets ‘magically’ warm by itself, and if you come back tired after a long day of adventures, you might be glad of an easy meal with no preparation or mess, which is ready in 10 minutes!

If you’d like us to give any presentations for your organisation, contact us and we will see what we can do to arrange it!

Natalie Thomas and the Me-Mover Challenge

Natalie Thomas is a British elite triathlete participating in a unique new challenge. She is riding a Me-Mover FIT 1800 km across Europe to not only show how fun being fit and active can be, but to raise money for Diabetes UK and the Danish Diabetes Association. What is a Me-Mover you may be asking? It looks similar to a scooter, but is a more like a three wheeled bike that uses your stepping actions to propel it forward giving you an intense full body workout.

She is well on her way now, but started in Copenhagen, Denmark and is travelling through Northern Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, and will be finishing in Lausanne Switzerland. She is on her own, carrying her food and staying in hostels and B&B’s along the way.

As you can imagine, there isn’t a lot of space to store things on such a small bike! A huge benefit of our low weight, smaller sized packs is that you can fit more food in and get more energy to fuel you on your journey. Natalie has packed and is eating our freeze dried main meals at the end of her days so she can get more Kcals, carbs and more in while not sacrificing a lot of space in her packs on the Me-Mover.
